Mesa Verde (Colorado)
Mesa Verde is the most wellknown place to visit cliff dwellings in the Southwest and it is not at all "off the beaten path" as most of the places displayed on this website.
Although this National Park is overcrowed in Summer, the dwellings are really spectacular (even if they are a little bit reconstructed), so they worth a visit and some
photography (it is not easy to avoid people on the pictures). Chapin Mesa has the nicest ruins, as Cliff Palace and Balcony House (only mandatory ranger-led tours),
Spruce Tree House (don't miss the Museum), Square Tower House... Unfortunatly, about half of the park has been burnt during recent years (but the ruins were saved).
